Ilya Shikshin: the 2011 European Champion!

After beating Artem Kachanovskyi (whom he called "his rival") in the semi-finals, Ilya Shikshin advanced to the Finals where he had to face Catalin Taranu (who beat Alexander Dinerchtein in the last round) for the European Champion title.

The game was relayed by EuroGoTV on KGS, and it reached 730 observers! It was a very exciting game: Ilya (White) clearly outplayed his opponent (he got such a huge territory by attacking!) and he became the undisputed European Champion for the second time in a row after winning by 21,5 points this important game.

Congratulations Ilya!

The players shook hands. Catalin was also applauded by everyone.

Artem defeated Alexander today in the European third-place final so he is also to be congratulated.

Finally, Youngsam Kim finished the EGC Main Tournament in first place with the impressive 10-0 record. That is a great achievement!

It was a superb tournament. Thanks to all the players for their great games and congratulations to the winners!

That's right, jim gave the verdict that black won and some supporters of Taranu jubilated.
Though, another high rated player (I don't remember his name exactly) said that they all might be wrong.

There is no hate at all in my comment, just a little bit of sarcasm regarding some "experts" in KGS chat :))

Yes, I know this is a Go site. And my quote is from Russian classical book - I'm sure new European Champion knows many parts of it by heart :))

Congratulations to Ilya and all the Russian team. Great respect to Catalin and all other participants.

WinPooh, don't you think you go too far with your hate ?
This is just a go site. Don't read this newspaper, if you don't like it.

'...And, God forbid - never read Soviet newspapers before
dinner.'
'M'mm . . . But there are no other newspapers.'
'In that case don't read any at all.'

Ilya said that he was always ahead (from the beginning). Maybe it's hard to see, but the key part was White's sacrifice to gain a lot of influence. Those were not mistakes by Ilya.
I also have the feeling that Mr. Catalin was outplayed in this game.

I am not a strong player and I tried to learn from dan players comments.
Jim(6dan) said all the time that white had no chance to win and the game was over. Other spectators cheered every move made by mr.Catalin like he played brilliantly, while mr.Shikshin made only mistakes.
In the end I was totally confused how could happen that white won.

I want to see Ilya and Artem become insei in Japan. I think they can become professionals there. Perhaps Korea would be too hard.
