 Few more words about Hirata:
After training as an insei along with Yamabe Toshiro and seeing Yamabes progress, he decided he was too weak at go and so abandoned the idea of becoming a professional. He won the world amateur championship in 1995 after surviving cancer.

 Thanks for the preview, Alexander.
Nice read! I advised my editor to quote it in Dutch magazine GO.

 One more note:
This is probably the weakest WAGC in history. Many European countries did not send their top players. For example, we cannot find Ilya Shikshin, Artem Kachanovskij, Christian Pop, Ondrej Silt, Matthew Macfadyen, Leshek Soldan, Pal Balogh and Laurent Heiser ...

Oleg was 3rd in Russian championshjip. I won it, but WAGC is open for amateurs only. Ilya Shikshin (roln111) was 2nd, but he is still in hospital
